Both might work. Do what would make him happy what does he want. When i was little i had a bowl cut and it worked for me. Do what works for him. If his hair gets to long he might get mistaken as a girl that has happened to me more than once.

I like long hair, but not unkempt/grunge/hippie long hair ... something more refined. If he's more of a rough boy, short-messy hair is the way to go (but that's only my opinion ^_^)
